Healthy Monday Tip! Plant an Edible Treat!

May 10, 2010

There are so many benefits to growing one’s own food.  You can save money, get exercise, and gain a lot of personal satisfaction from the simple act of planting a seed, tree, bush, etc.

We planted ten blueberry bushes in January, and a mere five months later, they are putting off early blooms.  In a year or two, we should have wonderful, tasty, fresh, HEALTHY blueberries for our cereal, muffins, pancakes, or simply for snacking!

Take a Saturday and plant whatever edible treat you absolutely love.  This time of year… tomatoes are a great option.  If you have limited space, you can even plant hanging tomatoes.  They don’t require planting in the ground but will grow in baskets!  If you do have space, try zucchini, okra, yellow squash, bell peppers, or cucumbers.  In the fall, try winter squash, lettuce greens or brussel sprouts.

Blueberry and blackberry bushes are also great options if you have the space.

Take a look at a few early blueberry blooms…
